KARBALA (IQNA) – Iraq’s communications ministry said it will provide free Internet access to pilgrims visiting the holy city of Karbala, starting from the Arbaeen season.

Omar al-Amiri, the ministry’s spokesman, said the required mechanisms and equipment have been prepared and necessary coordination has been made with relevant authorities in this regard, Al-Furat News reported.

He added that there have also been coordination and cooperation with international sides, including Iranians, for providing communication services to pilgrims during the Arbaeen season.

The free Internet access will be available in Bain-ul-Haramain (an area between the holy shrines of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS) in Karbala) throughout the year, starting from Arbaeen, he noted.

Earlier, the ministry had provided pilgrims in the holy shrine of Imam Kadhim (AS) with free Internet access during the first ten days of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites on Arbaeen.

The pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to the holy city.
